요약Heat is the leading cause of weather fatalities in the U.S., making the role of visual communication in notifying people about extreme heat exposure in outdoor recreation areas a matter of life and death. Out of the various media that communicate the danger, the trailhead sign is the only one that all visitors encounter. The visual communication on the trailhead signs varies significantly from area to area. This study aims to analyze the role of visual communication in notifying people about extreme heat exposure in outdoor recreation areas to prevent dangerous rescues and deaths.The study employed quantitative and qualitative methods to understand the issue comprehensively. The first experiment involved a survey that probed participants' understanding of maps, colors, trails, and variable real-time color-coded information. The second experiment analyzed existing trailhead signs by cataloging various visual design elements. In the third experiment, outdoor recreation professionals were interviewed to gain valuable experience and insights.The results show that the federally established hue of purple is perceived as the lowest temperature and risk, not the highest as intended. Additionally, the shoulder season months, or conditions that mimic it, are dangerous to visitors in outdoor recreation areas that experience extreme heat. Finally, variable real-time color-coded information on heat risk exposure is more effective at communicating the danger than traditional trail maps.The practical implications of our findings are significant. They provide a foundation for establishing best practices in designing and communicating heat risk information to visitors in outdoor recreation areas. By implementing universal risk-informing design elements such as colors, icons, and areas of signs, we can ensure that all outdoor recreation areas effectively communicate the dangers of extreme heat.
