- 요약n the historical processes of the dispute over what race or the Brazilian race means, representations of the "black mother" have appeared repeatedly. This dissertation investigates why and how contemporary black female artists reclaim a revision of the images of "black mother" in their visual and literary artistic works. This research addresses how Rosana Paulino, Renata Felinto, and Carolina Maria de Jesus resort to archives of slavery, such as photographs of wet nurses, and to archives of Brazilian art, such as modernist representations of the "black mother". The analysis of selected works by these artists shows that the representations of "black mother" have been both a product and producers of history, particularly during periods of change in prevailing racial ideologies: the abolitionism of the late 19th century; the construction of the myth of racial democracy in Brazil in the 1920s-1930s; and the state recognition in the early 21st century of the legacy and persistence of racial inequalities in Brazil. In such periods, representations of "black mothers", whose work of childcare and/or domestic care remained central in Brazilian society, oscillated between symbols of affection or violence depending on the prevailing racial ideology and the context of image production. What these contemporary black artists point out is that stereotyped images of the black mother actively contribute to the maintenance of social, racial, and gender inequalities in society. At the same time, these artistic works show the constant agency of black women and black people in resisting these control images. The self-representation of black women in visual arts, literature, and poetry becomes a way to recover and recreate images of the black woman linked to a reterritorialization in space and time oriented by ancestry, therefore by an Afro-diasporic worldview. Thus, this investigation contributes to discussions that privilege the intersection of race, gender, class, motherhood, and the construction of a national identity in the field of art, culture, and history. Highlighting the historical resistance of black women to control images through modes of reconnection with ancestral memory is fundamental for a broader reflection on society, in the field of Decolonial Feminism, Psychoanalysis, Brazilian Visual Arts, and Brazilian Literature.
