Summary, Etc.
요약This two-study dissertation explored the lived experience of making music synchronously with others mediated by the internet-a practice called networked music performance (NMP). The following two empirical studies are complementary in both subject matter and method. In the first study, I used a collective case study model to examine the newcomer's experience of NMP. In the second study, I used a phenomenological approach to explore the NMP experience of advanced practitioners. Findings from these two studies illuminate the unique nature, strengths, and weaknesses of the musical experience when mediated by computer network and suggest potential for numerous applications of NMP in music education settings.Paper 1: Music Together, Apart: A Collective Case Study of Novice Networked Music PerformanceThe purpose of this collective case study was to examine making music under the conditions of internet-mediated synchronous NMP in order to understand the implications of this technology for music teaching and learning. Participants used widely available digital tools to minimize latency and maximize sound quality. Research questions included: What is the nature of both musical and non-musical communication taking place? What musical styles and behaviors are more or less successful under these conditions? What challenges or obstacles do participants experience? Four trios of instrumental musicians (N=12) were provided with the necessary hardware, software, and technical support to set up high-fidelity audio connections with video. Internet connection speed was naturalistic and varied by participant. The software application FarPlay was used for this study. Data include 12 transcripts of semi-structured pre-interviews, field notes and transcriptions of 20 rehearsal audio and video recordings, 57 participant journal entries (submitted after each rehearsal), 12 individual post interviews, and three post-study focus groups, all conducted virtually. Data were analyzed using MaxQDA software, with repeated readings of the full data set for constant comparative coding then axial coding. Emergent themes include distance, mitigation, and presence. Findings were discussed through the lens of Distributed Cognition Theory (Hutchins, 2000). Implications include potential for wider adoption of the remote private lessons format, the remote chamber music format, and greater equity of access to music education for people with physical disabilities, people with immune deficiencies, and people who are geographically isolated.Paper 2: Intimacy at a Distance: A Phenomenology of Advanced Networked Music PerformanceThe purpose of this phenomenological study was to gather and analyze perspectives on NMP from musicians experienced with the medium. Research questions included: What is the lived experience of NMP for experienced practitioners? How do participants perceive and confront the phenomena of latency, fidelity, and telepresence when engaging in NMP? Using a phenomenological protocol developed by Moustakas (1994), experienced users of NMP (N=15) were interviewed for this study. In total, 1,236 minutes of interview data were recursively analyzed and synthesized into textural and structural meanings and essences. Implications include the importance of digital tools' affordability, proper selection, and effective use in music teaching and learning contexts. The essence of the lived experience of NMP was found to be a transformative redefinition of musical connection and collaboration in the digital age, through which musicians transcend physical distances to create a shared, immersive musical space.
