Summary, Etc.
요약Racism is a system of advantage based on race that affects (and is affected by) both how people think, feel, and behave and our social environments (Roberts & Rizzo, 2021). In psychological science, this system disadvantages race scholars and their scholarship. This dissertation consists of three field-experiments that uncover concrete ways by which racism is maintained and reinforced in psychology scientific publications through the expression of and reaction to White scientific values. First, I examine a mode in which scholars express White scientific values through research communication. More specifically, I examine whether describing the same exact research conducted using White samples vs. diverse samples would shape how psychology Ph.D. students communicate about the generalizability of the research (Chapter 2). Second, I shed light into means in which scholars reactto White scientific values through journal engagement. That is, I investigate whether the presence of White journal editorial boards (compared to diverse editorial boards), the typical representation of mainstream journal editorial boards, elicit expectations of discrimination towards race scholars (but not non-race scholars), and ultimately, whether such expectations push those race scholars to publish elsewhere (Chapter 3). In both projects, I discuss ways in which a legacy of racism continues to reinforce epistemic oppression by motivating race scholars (vs. non-race scholars) to disengage with mainstream journals and differentially report diverse samples (vs. White samples). In each project, I conclude with evidence-based policy recommendations that provide concrete solutions for how to reduce epistemic oppression practices in mainstream psychological science (e.g., diversifying editorial boards and standardizing sample reporting procedures).
