Summary, Etc.
요약Some non-actual events feel closer to having happened than others. Our capacity for counter-factual thought-to reason about events not as they were, but as they could have been-helps inform such closeness intuitions. This dissertation seeks to elaborate on the properties of events which make such alternatives appear close. In the following experiments, I examine the influence of lexical items and event properties on counterfactual proximatives (Experiments 1-2), address how knowledge of causal mechanisms guide the plausibility of counterfactual alternatives (Experiments 3-4), and explore how differences in outcome valence may bias counterfactual closeness judgments (Experiment 5-6). The findings from these experiments provide evidence that beliefs about counterfactual closeness are guided by a variety of factors. These factors include (1) the propensity of entities towards a particular outcome, (2) the belief in causal mechanisms which systematically relate causes to their effects, and (3) the frequency of contrastive sets of possibilities. Lastly, I discuss the implication of these findings for current theories of close counterfactuals and future directions of research.
