요약Fast Optical Emission Spectroscopy (FastOES) is a novel diagnostic utilizing measured emission intensities and collisional-radiative modeling to study electron temperature oscillations in Hall thrusters. Advantages include that it is non-invasive, relatively simple, and has potential as an in-flight diagnostic. This dissertation focuses on electron temperature variations related to the breathing mode, a key Hall thruster oscillation around tens of kHz.Key findings reveal that electron temperature oscillations in a Hall thruster can be significant depending on the operating condition and that they are out of phase with the discharge current. Furthermore, an extension of FastOES is utilized to study the phase relationship between ion and neutral populations, providing experimental evidence of the predator-prey relationship between electrons and neutral atoms theorized to drive the breathing mode.Collisional-radiative models (CRMs) are paired with OES measurements to determine the electron temperature. A CRM for xenon is applied in a unique modeling effort to evaluate the accuracy of laser-induced fluorescence (LIF), another Hall thruster diagnostic used for model calibration. The research also explores other spectroscopy applications for Hall thrusters, including imaging cathode species contributions and OES for other species. Overall, this work underscores the complex interactions between electrons, ions, and neutral species in a plasma, and demonstrates the potential of FastOES in plasma propulsion research.
