Summary, Etc.
요약Ruderal refugeehood sheds light on a series of historical shifts that coalesce around Palestinian (and some Syrian) agricultural workers in southern Lebanon. Both bucolic borderland and battlefield, the trajectory of the south since the turn of the 19th century has been distinctly shaped by the intersection between the ecological and colonial. In a way that is uniquely southern, life and death have taken root in the land, people, and environment (both natural and built). This permeation has unfolded physically - for example, through border demarcations, neocolonial incursions and their enduring toxicities, the reincarnation and (im)pending expiration of Palestinian citriculture, and the refugee camps that dot Tyre's urban landscape - as well as socio-politically - via othering and abandonment of the south, the racialized subjugation of Palestinians, and the traditions, cultures, value regimes, and imperial frameworks that followed refugees into Lebanon. Thus, southern land and territory, including their correlating resources, ecosystems, applications, and manifestations, have functioned as a nexus for the consolidation, implementation, and preservation of power. Within this dynamic, through its ebbs and flows, Palestinian refugees have been a point of convergence for the ecological and colonial. A constant and center, their labor, expertise, and experience fueled the development of both southern agriculture and the city of Tyre. As a result, the sector itself has come to constitute a principal and complementary terrain for the socio-political and economic marginalization of Palestinian refugees.Today, these interlaced genealogies and geographies have culminated in a Tyre defined by and dependent on the presence of refugeehood; specifically, the contributions refugees make within and through a gutted, neglected, and shrinking agriculture sector. Refugees manage and maintain an industry that is vital to the food provision and security, articulations of community, and socio-economic circulations that sustain everyday life in and around urban Tyre; without refugees, or the crucial ways in which they prop up southern agriculture, the city of Tyre as we know it would not exist. Correspondingly, through Tyrian time and southern space, refugees mark an important but overlooked barometer for local developments, broader socio-political constellations, and their underlying logics. Ruderal Refugeehood thereby contends that centering Palestinian agricultural workers demystifies overarching assemblages of supremacy and repression, deconstructs the ways in which they touch down, and reveals how refugees animate and assemble novel or patterned phenomena across scope and scale. The actions and experiences of refugees then, are key to understanding the pasts, presents, and futures of (southern) Lebanon. Related, investigating refugeehood in contemporary Tyre amid Lebanon's multilayered crises can help decipher colonial and ecological collusion: the material dispossessions they've engendered, ideological hierarchies they've enforced, and violent practices of inhabitation they've fostered. In doing so, we might better comprehend, and therefore counter, the architectures of constraint that connect and coordinate us all.
