- 요약This dissertation elaborates the constitution and negotiation of political relations in the everyday practices of people in contexts without a sovereign authority and lacking a single hegemonic ideology. In such contexts, political relations and their institutionalization in polities are negotiated through a range of traditions and their situated, contextual instantiations that reproduce them and produce novel traditions and modalities of meaningful action. This dissertation traces such processes, i.e., the reproduction of extant traditions and the emergence of novel ones to articulate situated, contextual modalities of political practice in the everyday and their affordances to political agents. It traces these processes in the settlement landscape of the multi-component site of Maski - located in the Raichur Doab of North Karnataka. Specifically, it examines the constitution of MARP-30, a settlement at Maski during the 13th and 14th centuries, during which several dynastic states of Medieval South India contested the Doab. Indeed, contestation over the doab was a critical element of politics in Medieval South India from the late first millennium until the 17th century. These contests, instability and investments in the doab afforded the inhabitants of Maski unique challenges and affordances to draw on in their own political projects. MARP-30 evinces a range of such choices materialized in its landscape. This dissertation traces the political practices through which the politics of MARP-30 were negotiated and realized in the architecture and landscape of the settlement. It traces spatial relations within the settlement and the modalities of architectural practice through which they were inscribed into the landscape of the settlement. It also traces the differential mediation of patterns of movement in the settlement by this architecture. Triangulating between movement patterns and architectural investments in the settlement landscape this dissertation traces the social and political relations and their negotiation materialized in MARP-30. It also examines these practices to illustrate their relationship with cosmopolitan political traditions mobilized in other parts of South India to articulate polities and participation within them. Finally, this dissertation elaborates the extent to which the enrollment of these traditions in the politics of MARP-30 also realizes Medieval South Indian polities, suggesting that polities are created in their differential realization when enrolled in 'local' contextual situated political negotiations. That is also to say that polities are not created nor exist en bloc.
