- 요약Although ample research has focused on the benefits of social connection with close others, social connection with non-close others may carry important benefits for building cooperative, flourishing communities. Compared to one's inner circle, strangers and weak ties (e.g., acquaintances, neighbors, coworkers) are relatively novel interaction partners with varied backgrounds. As such, interactions with these non-close others may particularly facilitate prosocial process related to openness and kindness toward dissimilar others. Positivity Resonance Theory suggests that beyond the quantity of interactions, the quality of interactions with weak ties and strangers, marked by shared positive affect and caring synchrony, may especially build communal benefits (Fredrickson, 2016). Across five studies, this dissertation investigated whether positivity resonance with weak ties and strangers builds the prosocial qualities of intellectual humility and altruism toward similar and dissimilar others. I employed wide-ranging methods to manipulate and measure weak-tie and stranger positivity resonance across studies, while consistently using repeated measures designs to test participants' intellectual humility and altruism toward people with either similar or opposing political views across a range of topics. Following an initial test of associations (Study 1; N = 399), I experimentally manipulated the valence of affective weak-tie experiences in a within-subjects design (Study 2; N = 72). In Study 3, I randomized participants, in a between-subjects design, to a behavioral intervention to increase weak-tie and stranger connectedness, compared to an active control, and tested effects on intellectual humility and altruism following an in lab 10-minute conversation with a stranger (Study 3a; N = 275) and via episode-level reports of positivity resonance with weak ties or strangers (Study 3b; N = 376). In a preliminary test of data from an ongoing study (Study 4; N = 91), I tested whether, following a meetup with a strong or weak-tie colleague, positivity resonance was associated with intellectual humility and altruism toward dissimilar colleagues using workplace vignettes. Broadly, findings suggested that positivity resonance with strangers may increase intellectual humility toward people with opposing views, whereas positivity resonance with weak ties may facilitate altruism toward similar and dissimilar others. I conclude with a discussion of future directions and implications of this program of research.
