- 요약When the United States annexed New Mexico in 1846, Hispanos began organizing a struggle for political power in their occupied homeland. "Pedagogies of Resistance and Self-Preservation" examines two important aspects of this struggle - education and land. Specifically, it examines how Hispano education evolved in relation to the Hispano land rights struggle from 1846 to 1919. Important during this period, were the Hispano-controlled land grants and communities in northern New Mexico. This dissertation examines how Hispanos used their land and political power to establish and develop schools in their communities. It also examines how they used education to resist the Anglo Americans and Europeans who attempted to dispossess them from their land and political power. This dissertation privileges Hispano views and perspectives on education and land rights. It examines local sources created by Hispanos who lived in the San Miguel, Mora, and Colfax counties. Set against the backdrop of the struggle for land, the teaching and learning that occurred in Hispano-controlled schools helps us to understand the Hispano experience in the American Southwest. In areas where Hispanos maintained some control over their land and communities, they were able to craft a schooling experience where Hispano students learned their native language, how to survive in the changing society, and how to govern their homeland.
