Summary, Etc.
요약Examining ecological dynamics across different levels of organization has fundamental significance. The patterns unique to a range of scales are known to have unique causes and biological consequences. Variability is conditional on the level of description, and in this dissertation, we discuss system dynamics across four scales of ecological organization- from the level of individual traits within populations to the impacts of environmental changes on socio-ecological systems. We examine how population biology is influenced by factors such as, life-history traits, adaptions such as migration, population ecology of the species, and broader socio-ecology. The first chapter describes necessary background and summarizes the main contributions of this thesis. The next chapter examines how individual-level differences and population density contribute to trade-offs in multiple traits (such as survival, growth, recruitment) and variation in fitness for Soay sheep population. In chapter three, we analyze how migration can promote population growth rates in the presence of environmental heterogeneity suggesting that site-specific stochastic variation in growth rates may be a significant driver of migratory behavior. Chapter four examines species-level covariation between reproductive dispersion and life-history speed and its consequences for time to convergence to stable st(age) structures. Finally, the fifth chapter focuses on how rapid environmental changes are altering high-altitude ecosystems and traditional agricultural practices with evidence from Trans-Himalayan Region in India.
