- 요약This document comprises two main parts which will respectively focus on toccatas and folk song piano arrangements. The toccata part discusses how composers, Johann Sebastian Bach, Claude Debussy, Sergei Prokofiev, and Emma Lou Diemer, composed original piano works under the generic title of "Toccata." Another part explores Taiwanese pianist Yi-Chih Lu and his four piano arrangements, which draw on various traditional Taiwanese folk songs. The first part explores the history of the toccata and its development across various periods, illustrating certain intrinsic features of the toccata that permeate these works. It examines the roles these toccatas play in the composers' respective periods of composition and the individual approaches of composers in creating highly original works, despite all sharing the same title. The second part focuses on Yi-Chih Lu and his piano arrangements. Lu, a Taiwanese musician, was born and grew up in Taiwan. After completing high school, he moved to Europe for further music studies, majoring in piano performance. This classical music education in Europe significantly influenced his subsequent arrangements of Taiwanese folk songs. To date, Lu has composed numerous arrangements; the selected four works in this treatise serve as fitting examples to demonstrate Lu's compositional journey. Both Lu and his piano arrangements are gaining increasing recognition. Beyond merely representing Taiwanese folk songs, Lu aims to blend these with Western classical music elements in his compositions. It is meaningful to explore how Lu incorporates concepts and ideas from his Western classical music training into his treatment of Taiwanese folk songs.According to Florida State University's requirement, this research document is based on two public lecture recitals presented on April 27, 2022, and November 21, 2022.
