- Summary, Etc.
- 요약Rates of most mental illnesses are higher in the incarcerated population than in the general population, but access to care during incarceration remains limited. Numerous conventional supports and treatments for mental health are unavailable due to incarceration-specific environmental factors (e.g., no freedom of movement, separation from support systems). Thus, one can conclude that the same strategies used to treat mental illness in the community cannot necessarily be translated to the treatment of mental illness in carceral settings and that research on incarceration and mental health should reflect the unique experiences of incarcerated individuals. Community-engaged research (CEnR), which exists on a continuum from low levels of community involvement (e.g., informing communities about research opportunities) to high levels of community involvement (e.g., community-academic research partnerships), is an approach that reckons with who is invited to be involved in the creation of knowledge and strives to upend the status quo by incorporating perspectives that are not typically included in academic research. The current dissertation includes two projects that each represent an effort to involve lived experience perspectives in research on mental health and incarceration, albeit on opposite ends of the CEnR continuum. The first surveyed individuals at a women's prison about their mental health treatment preferences. For this project, community partners provided feedback on the study but were not involved in research procedures. Results showed high favorability for mental health treatment across the board, with the highest ratings for self-administered treatment options. Participants also preferred Department of Corrections providers to peer providers and individual support to group support. The second project details the process of building a successful community-academic partnership for research on mental health and incarceration. This chapter describes a partnership at the highest level of community involvement and characterizes community and academic perspectives on the research process, changes enacted throughout the project, and lessons learned from building an equitable partnership. In the final chapter, I provide a roadmap for academics engaging with CEnR researching the intersection of mental health and incarceration through two products that I developed: 1) The Five Preparatory Questions (5PQ) for CEnR tool, and 2) a model for best practices in CEnR for research on incarceration and mental health. My hope is that through sharing project results and the roadmap, more research teams engaged with issues related to the criminal legal system will embody the mentality of "nothing about us, without us".
