- 요약This paper analyzes twenty-first century works by living American composers featuring obsolete audio technologies that add elements of noise to the musical textures in which they are used. I use various interpretive frameworks to better understand the reasons for these implementations and the implications of the use of noise in these pieces. The paper views uses of these outdated audio formats through a postmodernist lens by examining the ways these composers deploy these media to rupture the notion of linear technological progress. The paper analyzes three works: William Dougherty's soft brown wax, Daniel Sabzghabaei's At any rate I. All the Lonely People, and William Basinski's The Disintegration Loops. The analyses synthesize traditional methods of musical analysis with novel interpretive frameworks to reach an understanding of both how and why the malfunction and degradation of older technologies are used as compositional themes of these works. My findings with regard to this specific strain of "post-format" postmodernism in the current digital age can provide better understanding of why noise is used across various styles of contemporary music.
