- 요약Systematic study of dynamic photophysical processes such as Singlet Fission (SF) and Triplet-Triplet Annihilation Upconversion (TTAUC) requires an abundance of viable samples. Structures which showcase these abilities are relatively rare and can feature complex syntheses with a variety of transformations involving sensitive intermediates. Pursuit of fixed geometry targets in our lab's previous efforts involved sequences of reactions in excess of ten steps, and with small overall yields. This thesis details early, cycloaddition-centered efforts, and goes on to describe the development of a new method for rigid polyacene dimer formation with shorter routes and higher yields, employing Catellani-like palladium catalysis for annulations between strained bicyclic fragments and halogenated polyacene feedstock. Through a systematic investigation of key reaction parameters, the working temperature of this modified CANAL protocol was reduced from over one-hundred degrees Celsius to seventy or, in some cases, sixty degrees. Modification of the solvent environment together with this reduction in temperature permits the use of linear polyacene starting materials containing up to at least five rings, and these new conditions were employed to obtain a small library of new anthracene, tetracene, and pentacene dimers suitable for study of SF and TTAUC.
