- Summary, Etc.
- 요약My doctoral written project is the beginnings of a foundational pedagogical method and educational tool for developing collaborative pianists, singers, and music educators. I have chosen to focus on vocal and piano music repertoire selections by living composers or composers from equity-seeking demographics or works that feature texts by poets from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds. The goal of this project is to create a unique resource that could be used as a supplementary tool in an undergraduate-level accompanying course dealing with vocal literature or as a learning resource for educators looking to incorporate non-standard repertoire in their teaching. Furthermore, the project will allow for a more equitable and representative playing field in the world of classical music through greater representation of diverse voices. Each section of the document uses musical examples to demonstrate a concept that would typically be introduced to a developing undergraduate collaborative pianist in an introductory accompanying course. This written project also includes an explanation of why technical, musical, and cultural competence matter for the college-aged collaborative pianist in the 21st century. The document includes a discussion of why educating through diverse repertoire would be especially beneficial for the evolving collaborative pianist profession and music field. The project includes a brief review of literature relevant to this topic, demonstrating the need for new materials that use non-standard music examples alongside pedagogical literature that already exists. Finally, the written project concludes with an annotated bibliography of resources that highlight the works of composers who are living and/or underrepresented in the standard vocal music repertoire.
