Summary, Etc.
요약The purpose of this study was to investigate the music-making experiences of 12th-grade students (N = 167). I used a cross-sectional survey design and a researcher-designed online questionnaire hosted in Qualtrics (Version XM) to answer the following research questions: (a) what is the nature of 12th-grade students' music-making experiences in and out of school?; (b) what motivates students to participate in musicmaking in and out of school?; and (c) what is the relationship between student demographics and music-making activities? Participants completed a voluntary survey with questions covering various aspects of their musical engagement in or out of school. Respondents participated in in-school activities (n = 93), including music theory, history, choir, band, and orchestra, which emerged as prevalent music-making activities. Most respondents (63%) reported engaging in two or more of these activities. Many participants also reported participating in out-of-school music activities (n = 83), with the majority also participating in more than one (59%). Students identified key motivating factors that influenced participation in both in- and out-of-school music activities. These factors included personal enjoyment, improving musical skills, and peers/friends. Among respondents, 34.7% participated in both in- and out-of-school music, while 29.3% reported no in- or out-of-school music-making. The study highlights the significance of music-making in places of worship as a highly prevalent out-of-school activity. Results also suggest that participants associate in-school music with community-building while perceiving out-of-school activities as more conducive to creative expression.
