Summary, Etc.
요약The development of gun violence as a public health crisis in the United States has led to an increasing demand for research on the topic (Braga, 2022; Eastman et al., 2020; Huff et al., 2017). Prior research has found a disproportionate amount of news coverage dedicated to gun violence resulting in homicides, with more novel or shocking homicides receiving increased coverage (Fox et al., 2021; Gruenewald et al., 2013; Gruenewald et al., 2009; Paulsen, 2003; Peelo et al., 2004; Sorenson et al., 1998). Not all incidents of gun violence result in homicide, however, and those shootings that leave a living victim do not appear to receive equivalent amounts of news media attention as their lethal counterparts. Although there are multiple crimes that legally constitute gun violence, this project specifically focused on comparing media coverage of nonfatal shooting incidents to that of fatal shooting incidents. Nonfatal shooting incidents occur more frequently than fatal shootings (Hipple & Magee, 2017; Hipple et al., 2019), yet little is known about how media news workers determine the newsworthiness of these crimes. Drawing from a social construction of social problems perspective and media framing theory, this study employed both a news media distortion analysis of fatal and nonfatal shooting incidents in local newspaper and a framing analysis of the shooting incidents that did receive newspaper coverage. This dissertation project analyzed data pertaining to shooting incidents in Indianapolis, Indiana, in the years 2017 and 2018. The databases included data from law enforcement reports on shooting incidents and the victims, as well as print news media coverage from The Indianapolis Star. Based on these data, there was an exploration of which shooting incident attributes were most important in predicting news coverage by conducting a news media distortion analysis. In addition, a framing analysis was conducted to examine how news workers choose to frame, or emphasize and de-emphasize, certain aspects of nonfatal shooting incidents that received print media coverage compared to fatal shooting incidents. Results from the analyses showed two things. First, both the type of the shooting and the number of victims were the two most influential variables when determining coverage of a shooting incident. Second, regarding how the shootings were reported, most shooting incidents that did receive media coverage were void of any true frames. That is, the details were reported with little opinion on the incident. The findings from both the distortion analysis and the framing analysis have implications for public understanding of gun violence and criminal justice policymaking.
