- 요약American composer Kevin Day (b.1996) experienced a quick rise to notoriety in the wind band community, largely fueled by the success of his Concerto for Euphonium and Wind Ensemble (2018). The work's first movement, premiered by Demondrae Thurman, Associate Dean and Professor of Euphonium and Chamber Music at Indiana University and the Texas Christian University Wind Ensemble, saw an outpouring of interactions and views through the spread of a social media post by Thurman. This premiere quickly led to a series of concerto commissions by Kevin Day, elevating his reputation and expanding his body of work. At this moment in time, Concerto for Euphonium and Wind Ensemble is one of four works written for euphonium by Black composers. The work's quality solidifies it as a piece that should be studied by high level euphoniumists. This performance guide incorporates analysis of form, motivic elements, and musical narrative concepts as delineated by Byron Almen. Furthermore, it draws from techniques informed through the author's preparation and performance experience, as well as insights gleaned from interviews with Kevin Day, Demondrae Thurman, and SSG Hiram Diaz of The President's Own United States Marine Band. In addition to the utilization of method books by Jean-Baptiste Arban, David Vining, and Johannes Rochut, Kevin Day's 25 Advanced Studies for Euphonium are highlighted as modern works written for euphonium that will serve as an aid to preparing the concerto. Finally, the guide includes exercises composed by the author that isolate passages from the music and simplify them, facilitating a thorough understanding of the intervallic relationships and techniques required to execute the Concerto at a high level.
