요약Methane mitigation-reducing emissions or atmospheric removal-may be a critical additional tool to lower global warming. I first quantify the temperature and air quality benefits of methane mitigation using a novel Earth System Model configuration that can interactively represent rising wetland methane emissions. I then compare the temperature impacts of methane and carbon dioxide and argue that the timeframe over which they should be compared is that which aligns with the Paris Agreement temperature goal to limit global warming to 2 ℃. Finally, I synthesize emissions data to quantify the amount of methane emitted annually by concentration and present constraints that localized methane oxidation reactors will have to satisfy in order to be climate beneficial and cost-effective.
