Summary, Etc.
요약French female composer Marguerite Canal was born in Toulouse in 1890. Canal's artistry was forged by her education that took place in Paris, the epicenter of French cultural life in the early 20th century. Deeply influenced by the different artistic movements of that time, her compositions reveal a rich, colorful, and very sensitive personality.Canal grew up in a cultivated art-loving family. Her mother was a piano teacher, and her father was an amateur cellist. The family was versed in literature and poetry, and from her young age, Canal received a complete literary education as well as being immersed in the Parisian salon world. She entered the Paris Conservatoire in 1903 and studied with Paul Vidal. In 1917, she became the first woman to conduct an orchestra in France. In 1920, she was the second woman to be awarded the First Grand Prize of Rome. During her stay at the Villa Medicis, Canal composed her famous Sonata for violin and piano. The three Esquisses Mediterraneennes for piano seem to have been drafted in the same period and published a few years later. These three pieces, "Les Jardins de la Villa Cypris", "Jeux du soleil sur les vagues", and "Spleen", receive a variety of stylistic influences. Besides being rooted in Impressionism and Symbolism, the set explores the various philosophies of time in vogue in the early 20th century and entertains a deep bond with Baudelaire's existentialist concept of spleen. This treatise presents a deep analysis of Canal's Esquisses Mediterraneennes, putting it in perspective with the diverse aesthetics emblematic of the French Impressionist school. The goal of this document is to give more visibility to a set of three captivating pieces and to contribute to the recognition of their author.
