- 요약The study of political thought as it relates to the American Founding tends, as one might expect, to focus on the canonical Founders. While this approach to the American Founding is an understandable one, it is an incomplete one. In hopes of expanding this conception of Founding era political thought, this project examines the writings of three women-Mercy Otis Warren, Judith Sargent Murray, and Phillis Wheatley-as important contributions to the political thought of the American Founding. This project focuses on how, by merit of their social roles as women, the writings of Warren, Murray, and Wheatley reveal new ways of examining American citizenship. Ultimately, these women of the Founding illuminate an important social and interpersonal understanding of citizenship heretofore understudied in political theory, which I term "the second citizenship.".
