Summary, Etc.
요약The purpose of this study was to explore the presence and application of Stoicism in today's world. As commonly misunderstood for emotional repression, the philosophy of Stoicism has much to offer today's leaders who continually face challenging situations beyond their control. In support of correcting the narrative and introducing Stoicism to leadership academia, the study identified evidence of positive Stoic-like behaviors in crisis and disaster response leaders (n =15) giving meaning to the presence of an ancient philosophy in the 21st century. The empirically based research adds to the growing body of peer-reviewed research drawing attention to positive psychological capacities available in practicing Stoicism (Brown et al., 2022; Brown & Hurdle, 2022; MacLellan & Derakshan, 2021). This study used a constructivist grounded theory methodology and collected crisis and disaster leaders' response to challenging situations through semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed in a rigorous grounded theory process using constant comparative method, theoretical sampling, multiple rounds of coding, and extensive use of analytical and methodological memos (Charmaz, 2014). Participant's experiences supported Stoicism as an active process influenced by individuals' worldview. To be Stoic was to have a strong sense of oneself within the world and acquiring practical tools to fulfill one's purpose including a strategic and practical mindset, fueled by self-awareness, and living presence in an optimized pursuit of those outcomes. Those variables aligned with the Stoics' perspective of eudaimonia, living a happy life by practicing good moral character and virtuous behavior, and their use of the three disciplines in working towards that purpose. The emotional capabilities expressed by participants support the presence and appropriateness of emotion as seen in Stoicism and leadership topics such as emotional intelligence. This working theory offers the field of leadership a starting point for leadership researchers to explore the wisdom of an ancient philosophy that can help support leaders facing challenging situations today and beyond.
