- 요약This dissertation is concerned with the nature of the basic building blocks of syntax, and their relation to the relevant pieces of phonology ("morphemes", or "exponents") - that is, the nature of interpretation at the PF interface. The investigation proceeds through a series of case studies, exploring and advancing the following three hypotheses. (1) The basic building blocks of syntax are features (as opposed to objects that have features). (2) The process that associates syntactic objects with phonology is can be characterized as a function, in the mathematical sense, which maps syntactic objects to phonological objects. The domain of this function ranges over syntactically derived objects (trees), rather than basic building blocks (heads). (3) the PF interface function contains sub-functions; each sub-function ranges over a tree and its sub-trees as its domain, and a particular phonology as its range. Sub-functions are selected in a target-maximizing, "best match" manner - that is, we try to externalize trees that are as big as possible, using the most specific function (that is, minimizing the number of many-to-one mappings).
