Summary, Etc.
요약Nonmetro America has experienced demographic shifts in the past several decades. The out-migration of young, educated people, economic restructuring, and an aging population means that rural America looks different than it did at the turn of the century. However, limited research has been done on fertility behaviors and desires in nonmetro versus metro America in the past two decades. Understanding the way childbearing timelines differ across geographic residence in the United States, as well as the way fertility desires differ, is important for understanding the landscape of modern nonmetro America. This dissertation enhances our understanding of fertility in the United States. First, an overview of fertility trends and fertility desires is provided. A review of the historical nonmetro versus metro fertility differences is covered as well as an explanation of how General Systems Theory, Ecological Systems Theory, and the Fertility Framework ground the study of fertility behavior by geographic residence. This dissertation uses the 2011-2019 waves of the National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG) to examine differences in fertility behaviors and desires across geographic residence in the United States. Chapter 2 uses discrete-time analysis to examine differences in age at first birth for females and males living in nonmetro, metro- central city, and metro - suburban areas of the U.S. Chapter 3 explores differences in the experience of unrealized fertility and fecundity across geographic areas for both females and males. Finally, Chapter 4 uses multinomial logistic regression to determine the relationship between geographic residence and birth wantedness for mothers and fathers in nonmetro, metro - central city, and metro - suburban areas. The conclusion of this dissertation discusses the implications of the findings from all three studies for rural family demography.
