- 요약Several authors have argued that there is an inconsistency in the classical concept of God, alleging that God may be perfectly free (on the assumption, also accepted here, that freedom entails non-necessitation), or omnibenevolent and omnirational, but not both. This dissertation develops an account of divine freedom of choice and action and uses it to rebut the inconsistency argument. After discussing problems with non-causal and event-causal theories of free action, it argues that the libertarian agent causal theory is the most plausible theory for the theist to endorse in relation to God. Since it is God's substance (and not his properties, motivating reasons, or other divine mental events) that causes his intentions, God has a robust control over his choices, even while being influenced by moral, rational, or other motivational reasons. It then argues that God would be free as well as morally and rationally unsurpassable in any of the following scenarios (the obtaining of which would partly depend on independent considerations): refraining from creating anything at all; actualizing a suboptimal world where there is an unsurpassable world; actualizing a surpassable world where there are infinitely many surpassable worlds; and actualizing just one among many unsurpassable worlds.
