- Summary, Etc.
- 요약There is preliminary evidence in studies on cyberoffending behaviors that residential contexts may shape online behavior. Motivated by traditional criminological theories of structural disadvantage and opportunity, I investigate whether residential neighborhood characteristics such as rurality, digital distress, and perceived collective efficacy have a relationship with online behavior. Multinomial analyses of a novel survey dataset of U.S. adult computer users reveal several findings that tie cyberoffending to traditional theories of offending behavior. Perceived neighborhood collective efficacy decreases the likelihood of certain types of cyberoffending, and individual-level predictors such as low self-control and cybervictimization are consistent risk factors for cyberoffending engagement. I discuss the implications for using criminological theory to investigate online offending behavior and implications for policies designed to address cyberoffending.
