Summary, Etc.
요약This dissertation uses a historical ethnographic approach to examine ghost narratives on the island of Ireland. Specifically looking at the tradition of ghost narratives and how those narratives encapsulate, express, and engage with the supernatural elements of communities in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, this research follows ghosts, and their reported activities, throughout the history of the island to see how the past is kept visible in the contemporary moment. Using historical methods alongside ethnographic ones, I explore the politics of hauntings in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland as well as the hauntings related to politics (political violence or political upheaval and unrest). In doing so, I offer an orientation for a better understanding of Irish relationships to the supernatural in a postcolonial context as well as an orientation for ethnographers to contemplate as they seek to understand a world inhabited by all community members, both living and dead.
