- 요약The purpose of this research is to connect musicians to theories of expert performance around music. Musicians spend a great deal of time developing musical ability but may not take the time to clarify or consider what musical ability really is or what that definition means for them. This research provides an overview of the cognitive mechanisms underlying skilled performance, beginning first with theories from the study of expert performance and then research on skilled musicians. One implication is the idea that expert performance is learnable in that it is facilitated by a collection of acquired memories for performance. Additionally, practice should be designed to develop this network of memories. This may include developing basic units of musical knowledge, such as recognizing and practicing scale patterns, practicing technical fundamentals, studying music theory, and other practices that increase a player's understanding of musical grammar and control over their instrument. There are also implications for how to build the mental representation of playing specific works. Results suggest players benefit from choosing artistic ideas as early as possible in the practice process, from moving between details and larger ideas within a practice session, and from practice moving through the piece with attention on pre-chosen cues.
