요약This study provides perspective on how higher education institutions, including the staff, faculty, students, and the local community responded to sexual violence. Rather than posing victims of sexual violence as helpless, incapable of self-advocacy, and without agency, I show how mid-twentieth understandings of sexual violence, gender norms, dating, race relations, and other social and cultural factors manufactured silence among victims. Two approaches inform this study. First, traditional history methods, such as the examination of college archival documents, court cases, and newspaper articles, help analyze cases of campus rape which were reported. A second approach seeks to answer questions about cases of rape which were not reported. In order to understand the underreporting of sexually aggressive crimes, sources that contain information about social conventions toward dating, sex, and violence are analyzed to understand how cultural narratives about rape often promoted the silence of victims and enabled perpetrators to avoid prosecution.
